Adrenal Analysis & Stress Resilience Testing in Ontario

Dr. Natalie Bozinovski

It’s Not “Fatigue.” It’s a Dysregulated Stress Response.

If you are navigating the exhaustion of chronic burnout, struggling with “wired but tired” energy shifts, or finding that your body no longer recovers from daily stress, the issue likely isn’t that your adrenal glands are “tired.” It is that the communication between your brain and your adrenals—the HPA-Axis—has become dysregulated.

In my virtual naturopathic practice, we move beyond the vague label of “stress” to map your unique physiological response. Using specialized Adrenal Function Profiles, we measure your cortisol and DHEA patterns to identify exactly where your system is losing its resilience and how to strategically restore your foundation.

Why Map Your Stress Response?

When your HPA-axis is out of sync, it creates a domino effect across your entire system. This testing is essential for addressing:

Persistent Weight Gain: Specifically around the midsection, driven by dysregulated insulin & glucose signaling.

Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep or waking up alert between 3-5 am.

Hormonal Imbalances: Dysregulated cortisol affects your reproductive and thyroid hormones from working efficiently.

Brain Fog & Mood Shifts: The impact of chronic cortisol exposure on cognitive function and emotional regulation.

The Science of the Adrenal Function Profile

A single blood draw for cortisol only shows a snapshot in time. To understand your stress resilience, we need to see how your hormones fluctuate over a full 24-hour cycle.

Through non-invasive saliva collection performed in the comfort of your home, we measure the two primary pillars of your stress response:

1. The Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) & Diurnal Rhythm

A single blood draw for cortisol is only a snapshot of a single moment. To truly understand your stress resilience, we need to see the “shape” of your energy throughout a full day. Using an at-home saliva collection kit shipped directly to your door in Ontario, we measure how your hormones fluctuate from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep.

The Morning Rise: Cortisol should naturally peak shortly after waking to provide the “get-up-and-go” needed for the day’s demands. If this peak is too low, you likely struggle with morning grogginess and a reliance on caffeine.

The Metabolic Arch: We track your levels at key intervals—noon, late afternoon, and evening—to ensure your “metabolic fire” is sustaining your energy without crashing.

The Evening Decline: As the day ends, cortisol should drop to its lowest point to allow melatonin to rise. If your levels stay elevated at night, it explains that “wired” feeling that prevents deep, restorative sleep and keeps your nervous system in a state of high alert.

2. DHEA-S: The Resilience Marker

While cortisol is your “gas pedal,” DHEA is your “buffer.” It is an anabolic hormone that helps protect your brain and tissues from the catabolic effects of chronic stress.

The Cortisol-to-DHEA Ratio: By looking at the balance between these two, we can determine if your body is in a state of acute stress (high cortisol/high DHEA) or chronic depletion (low cortisol/low DHEA).

A Strategic Roadmap to Resilience

We don’t just test and guess. My evidence-based virtual process ensures your data is translated into a high-level clinical strategy:

MSc-Level Analysis: Using my Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences, I interpret your cortisol curves to identify the specific nutritional and botanical interventions needed to “re-train” your nervous system.

Circadian Re-Alignment: We use your data to time your light exposure, exercise, and meals to match your body’s natural biological clock.

Targeted Botanical Medicine: We use adaptogens and nervines to either dampen a hyper-reactive stress response or support a depleted one, based on your exact lab markers.
